Creating Your Own Handout

You will be creating a handout that PERSUADES other people to TAKE ACTION to fight slavery in the chocolate industry.  Use your organizer when deciding what to add to your handout.

Here are some tips to make your handout effective:
  • Be CONCISE (Keep your information short, sweet and to the point!)
    • Use BULLET POINTS to communicate some of your information
    • Keep paragraphs SHORT if you are writing in paragraphs
  • Be CLEAR
    • Use TITLES/HEADINGS to tell the reader what you are talking about
    • Don't add anything to your handout unless it is RELEVANT (relates to your topic)
  • BE CREATIVE
    • Keep a BALANCE of pictures, text, and empty space so your handout isn't overwhelming
    • Use PERSUASIVE LANGUAGE to get your point across (don't waste words!)
Take a look at some examples of handouts below.  When you have finished, see the directions below the examples to get started on your own.

Creating your own handout using Microsoft Word:
  1. Open Classes (so you can save your work there later)
  2. Open Microsoft Word
  3. Select "File" and then "Project Gallery"
  4. Choose "Brochure"
  5. Choose the template that you like (make sure it fits the idea of raising awareness about slavery!)
  6. Use the pictures from http://gmsla6.blogspot.com/2012/05/look-at-following-pictures.html in your handout!
  7. If you want to delete a page in the template, scroll to that page and click on the "remove" button in the top left toolbar.
  8. Make changes to the template by clicking on the text.  Don't forget to replace EVERYTHING that doesn't relate!
  9. Save your work to your classes folder so you can continue working on it later
INCLUDE everything from your organizer that has a "check-box" next to it.  Remember to use the rubric to make sure you are on the right track!
