WHAM! The ball landed right in the corner of
Tommy’s square and continued flying out into the field. He chased after the ball. “Nice hit, Adam,” exclaimed Susie, “ I
guess that makes you the new king now!”
Tommy returned with the ball and tossed it to Adam.
Adam
whacked the ball right at Eric’s square.
“SUSIE! You gotta hear
this!” Susie turned to see who was yelling her name. As she turned to see Tina
waving her arms frantically, the ball smacked Susie right in the face. All of the boys cringed, embarrassed
for Susie. Eric apologized to
Susie over five times.
“It’s
okay. It didn’t even hurt,” Susie
could feel her skin burning where the ball had hit her; she rubbed her face and
glared at Tina. Tina sputtered, “A
group of girls have been talking about your sleepover tonight.” Susie waited for Tina to finish. “Well…it seems that…nobody wants to… go
anymore.”
“What?”
Susie stepped away from the game, her cheeks going red now for a different
reason. “I’ll be right back
guys. You can play without me.” She turned back to Tina, “I just talked
to them earlier today and they said they were coming over. Is this a joke? Because it’s not a very
funny one.”
“Sorry
Susie. It’s not a joke. It’s Sandra.”
“Why would Sandra care about my sleepover?”
“Why would Sandra care about my sleepover?”
“Do
you remember when you passed out the invites last week? You didn’t invite Sandra to the party,
remember?”
“Why
would I invite Sandra? She doesn’t
even like me. She never talks to
me unless she is telling me how ugly my outfit is or bragging about something
new that her dad bought for her.”
“I
know…but I guess she is having a sleepover tonight too…and all of the girls
want to go because Sandra’s parents bought us all tickets to go to the
concert…and there’s a limo ride!”
“This
is so unfair! Just because I didn’t invite her, she doesn’t have to go ruining
all of my plans! Wait…You’re still
coming to my sleepover tonight, right?”
Susie looked Tina straight in the eye.
“I
hope you won’t be mad at me, Susie.
But I told Sandra I would go.”
Susie
fixed her eyes on a pebble laying on the ground.
“Please
promise me you won’t be mad!” Tina pleaded, putting her hand on Susie’s
shoulder.
Susie
shook Tina’s hand off and didn’t look up.
“I
will text you on Saturday though, okay?” Tina quickly turned
and headed back to the swings.
Whatever, Susie thought to
herself. The last thing Susie was
going to do was let Sandra get to her.
Maybe she could just hang out with Adam, Tommy, and Eric instead.
Susie
turned around and instantly clenched her fists at what she saw: Sandra was in her square, playing with
all of her friends!
Sandra looked at Susie and narrowed her eyes.
She flipped her hair and giggled as she turned back to the game. “I’m so glad I could come and
play with you guys...You looked
so bored earlier.”
Susie slumped over to the
monkey bars as a single tear rolled down her cheek.
